Terrific Trichoderma
by Dr Ash Martin PhD BSc(For)Hons
Trichoderma have the potential to keep plants safe from diseases. Plant disease protection is commonly achieved through the application of agrochemicals. However, the extensive use of such chemicals has serious consequences for the environment and consumers. Trichoderma, a fungus that can control fungal diseases, can achieve similar outcomes, without a heavy human and environmental cost. Disease suppression, through biocontrol agents (BCAs), is an outcome of interactions between plants, pathogens and the microbial community. Trichoderma produce biologically active compounds, antibiotics and hydrolytic enzymes (including cell wall-degrading enzymes and secondary metabolites) that act against pathogens, promote the growth of plants and increase plant resistance to stress.
